Ceramic Series Airlock - Information
Our most durable valve, the ceramic series is most often chosen to handle highly abrasive products, such as alumina, coke, fly ash, and glass frit, achieving at least 3-5 times longer life compared to chrome and Ni-hard valves. A high-performance, thick wear layer of alumina ceramic coating maintains the valve's precision tolerances longer.

Beveled Tips
Used with fine products that can smear or pack between
the housing and rotor tips. The trailing edge of each blade is machined
at a 15° angle narrowing the “land area.” This feature increases operating
efficiency by minimizing drag and horse power. |
| Closed End Rotor
Built with side plates machined to the same diameter as the
blade tips, sealing the entire pocket at the rotor diameter. These rotors reduce
wear on the end plates and shaft seals, reduce air leakage and contain certain
types of free-flowing products that tend to "flush through."
|
 |
Shallow Pocket Rotors
Rotors reduce displacement by 25%, 50% or 75% of the original
capacity. They are used for two purposes: 1) to handle sticky products that tend
to pack in the narrow pocket bottoms and 2) when a higher RPM is required to
provide accurate, continuous flow in feeding applications.
|
 |
Bolt-On Wear Bars
Wear bars offer an effective means of renewing the wear portion of the rotor.
For general use and are available in various materials, such as brass, AR400 Alloy, stainless
steel and certain alloys are available. |
 |
Flexible Tips
Flexible tips are typically used for handling stringy or fibrous materials
that would otherwise jam traditional, hard tip rotors. For general use and are available in
Neoprene® or Teflon®. |
 |
Pellet Adaptors
Used when handling larger particles or pellets that can shear or
jam between the rotor tips and housing. Inlet baffles limit material to filling
the back half of the pocket, wipe the blade tips prior to entering the housing and
reduce degradation of friable materials. Available in mild or stainless steel. |
 |
Convey Line Adaptors
Efficiently designed to transition the airlock discharge to a
pneumatic conveying line while adding minimal height to the valve. Compared to
"blow through" airlocks, where pneumatic air forces material through
the rotor pocket, drop-through designs result in minimal wear of the valve internals. |
Other available options
| Base Material of Construction |
316 Cast Stainless steel available on all Ceramic Airlocks |
| NEW Heavy-Duty Seal Design |
New abrasion resistant packing rings provide additional wear resistance
against abrasive powders and a more form-fitting, positive seal around the shaft. Additional packing rings are
included for sealing against higher internal valve pressures. Tighter tolerances provide better support for the
packing and throttle air leakage from within the valve. Self-adjusting packing glands are replaced with
manually adjusted packing glands capable of additional pressure. For fine, free-flowing and abrasive chemical powders. |
Air Purge Options
 |
Lantern Rings
On applications with abrasive materials or for higher internal air pressure, lantern rings permit air purging of
the shaft seals. This prolongs seal life by preventing gas from escaping and from fine abrasive powders from
contaminating conventional seals. Available in bronze or nylon.
Air Purge Kit
Kit includes electronically operated air valve in NEMA 4 or NEMA 7/9 construction, filter/ regulator with gauge,
flow meters and oversized lines for proper flow to the lantern rings* (not included in kit. Sold separately.)
Airlock will ship with kit installed on specially designed mounting bracket. |
Pocket Vent
|
Optional NPT fitting tapped and plugged for shipment. Option recommended with the airlock discharges to a pressurized environment. Venting provides a means to displace the air that pressurizes empty rotor pockets before they return to the inlet side of the valve, thus optimizing product flow into the valve. |
| Drives |
STANDARD Inverter Duty gearmotor, Heavy-Duty motor base, polyethylene
OSHA guard, sprockets and chain. Optional motor classes and AC Frequency drives for variable motor speed.
*Other options may be entertained at customer's request.
Available Motor Classes:
Totally Enclosed, Explosion Proof (TEXP) - for use in hazardous environments.
Totally Enclosed, Fan Cooled (TEFC) - This motor is probably the most commonly used motor in
ordinary industrial environments.
Totally Enclosed, Not Ventilated (TENV) - This motor is used in a wide variety of smaller
horsepower variable speed applications. It is particularly effective in environments where a fan would
regularly clog with dust or lint.
Washdown Duty: Designed for use in applications where the motor is exposed to water and
high humidity. These motors are designed for frequent cleaning with a high-pressure spray. Some typical
applications that utilize Washdown Duty motors include food processing plants, canneries & car washes.

Packing Glands
 |
An exclusive benefit for most Prater Airlocks.
This unique feature allows for a continual and equalized pressure applied to the packing,
thus reducing the possibility of product leaking from the valve and damaging the outboard bearings. The design helps
approach the first Maintenance-Free airlock built in the world.
Self-Adjusting
This unique feature allows for a continual and equalized pressure applied to the packing,
thus reducing the possibility of product leaking from the valve and damaging the outboard bearings.
Manually Adjusted
For fine, abrasive powders or when preferred, self-adjusting packing glands can be replaced
with manually adjusted packing glands capable of additional pressure.

Motion Switch & Sensor
 |
The sensor provides airlocks, running or stopped, feedback to the control
or alarm system. The switch shuts off the airlock. |
| Shear Pins |
These are available in several shear strengths. They are used to prevent
damage to the airlock caused by overloading or jamming. Specified where the airlock will be handling large
particles under full load. |
| Electronic Shock Relay |
NEW! Prater now offers an electronic shock relay to take the place of
shear pins. These simple to install devices protect from damaged caused when a valve jamb occurs by allowing
the user additional flexibility to set a threshold BELOW full motor amperage without sacrificing operational
quality due to nuisance. |
